Double Draw

A Five-Card Draw variant with two separate draw rounds instead of one, giving players a second chance to improve before the final showdown.

Coming soon β€” not yet playable

Rules

Double Draw is dealt like standard Five-Card Draw: five cards face down to each player, followed by a betting round.

First draw: players may discard up to three cards (or more, per house rule) and draw replacements, followed by a second betting round. Second draw: players may again discard (commonly capped at two cards on this second draw) and draw replacements, followed by a third betting round and showdown.

Showdown: the best standard five-card poker hand wins, exactly as in regular draw poker.

Strategy notes: With two chances to improve instead of one, starting-hand standards loosen slightly compared to standard Five-Card Draw, and reading how many cards an opponent takes on each of the two draws (rather than just one) gives extra information to work with over the course of the hand.

Common house rules

  • Discard limits per draw

A common convention caps the first draw at three cards and the second at two, though some tables allow discarding up to five on either draw β€” agree on this before dealing.

  • Jacks or better to open, optionally

Some tables layer the Jacks or Better opening requirement (also in this library) onto Double Draw for extra structure, though this isn't part of the base game.

  • A gentle step up from standard draw

Double Draw is a natural next game for a table that's comfortable with standard Five-Card Draw and wants to try a triple-draw-style game like Deuce-to-Seven without jumping straight to lowball hand rankings.
